Reading
Do you have a beginning reader that just can't seem to sound out the words on a page? Is he or she becoming frustrated because they cannot keep up with their peers? Reading will typically get better with practice but understanding how letters and sounds work together will eliminate a lot of frustration. I teach reading starting at the basics with the phonogram sounds and building off of it with engaging readers, interactive and hands-on games, mnemonics, flashcards, fun worksheets, poem memorization, etc. Your child will go from frustrated to confident as they continuously build on their understanding.
Math
Somewhere around the fourth grade, it will become notably obvious what foundational gaps are present in a student's understanding of math. This is the grade that students are expected to already know the "basics" and start to get into concepts that build off of those basics. The problem is that students are learning how to divide when he or she is still struggling with multiplication. I have tutored students that were expected to do long division but were still trying to grasp how to subtract with borrowing. This is certainly not the student's fault; this is not always the teacher's fault. In the fast-paced educational environment, where many times there is a ratio of 1:20, students are expected to be on the same level as their peers. Ultimately, these students that can't keep up are left behind. When these students come to me for help, I start back at the basics and fill in all of the gaps. My students are taught math through engaging, hands-on activities, mnemonics, games, flashcards, short cuts, catchy memorization techniques, etc. Most of my students say that they have a blast in our sessions and they did not even realize they were learning. For me, it is so rewarding to watch them go from embarrassed and defeated to trying to raise their hands the highest among the group so they can be called on to proudly answer a question that was once impossible for them.
Writing
One of the biggest requests I get from parents is to help their struggling writer. The student is told to write on a certain topic but they have not been properly trained on how to organize their thoughts and they quickly become overwhelmed. To make matters worse, their teacher keeps returning their essay requesting edits but the student doesn't understand why. How frustrating!  I get it; writing can be very intimidating, and from my observation, many people that do not address the issue continue to struggle with it throughout life. One of the problems is that writing is subjective but there is a solution to please even the pickiest teacher. There is a formula for writing that if it is learned, understood, and implemented, your child will excel. I have had writing students that went on to Ivy League schools and told me that because of what they learned from me, they were at the top of their class. Writing well can change your life.
Literature
Do you want to become a great writer? Then read great books. Do you want to feel enpowered? Read great works of literature. Mark Twain said: "The man who does not read good books is no better that the man who can't read." There are countless examples of amazing pieces of literature that still empower and entertain people today. My literature students learn rather quickly how passionate I am about great works of literature and most of them begin to share my sentiments. My students learn many literary terms such as metaphor, hyperbole, theme, personification, etc. They learn rich vocabulary and advanced writing skills as they respond to the piece of work we are reading. I have had many students attend my literature classes that did not care much for reading but had a whole new outlook at the end of the school term.
